Translation rates and what they include at Monica Machado Translation Services
Interviewer – Very brave of you to discuss rates as this is always something people want to know more about but are afraid of asking. Why choosing this topic?
MM – I think it is very important that clients, and my clients in particular, know what they will be paying for when asking me to provide translation services.
Interviewer – So how do you determine what rates to charge?
MM – My rates result from a series of factors, such as receiving professional training (including regular CPD) and having years of technical expertise, professional memberships, professional indemnity insurance, up-to-date computer software and other translation tools. The rates I charge also include self-proofreading of the translation after translation completion and query resolution with clients/authors, stages not all translators have (or are allowed) time to complete.
Interviewer – So let’s say that your rates result from a mix of soft and hard skills?
MM – Yes, that is so. Apart from the internal factors above, which we can control, there are also external factors that we cannot control and that impact on our rates. I am based in the UK and therefore for many clients this is a credibility factor. However, this is also a factor that increases my rates, as by being fully compliant with the UK rules and regulations I pay tax and social security and have a professional accountant. All these have a cost and they have to be factored in when I calculate my rates.
Interviewer – So, would you say that by being based in the UK your rates may be less competitive?
MM – I am absolutely sure that by being based in the UK I am less competitive in terms of rates when compared to other colleagues operating in other less controlled business environments. Apart from that, the cost of living of the country we are based in also influences our costs and therefore our rates. However, since I follow good business and financial practices which can be subject to Due Diligence checks, I can assure my current and prospective clients that my business is 100% compliant and this is something that many International clients value immensely.
